Colca & Cotahuasi Canyons

Arequipa department in southern Peru is known for its dramatic volcanic and high altitude desert scenery. 2 rivers flowing from the high Andes in this area to the Pacific Ocean have carved out the 2 deepest canyons in the world, namely the Colca and Cotahuasi. Both are more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, with Cotahuasi by a short distance the deepest.

Solimana volcano and Yareta plant
Solimana volcano is one of several giant volcanoes that loom over the barren high altitude desert around Arequipa. At 6093m / 19,990m its steep faces represent a serious challenge for climbers. The green plant in the foreground is Yareta (Azorella compacta), which is very slow growing (up to 1cm / year) and used by locals for fuel.
