Colca & Cotahuasi Canyons

Arequipa department in southern Peru is known for its dramatic volcanic and high altitude desert scenery. 2 rivers flowing from the high Andes in this area to the Pacific Ocean have carved out the 2 deepest canyons in the world, namely the Colca and Cotahuasi. Both are more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, with Cotahuasi by a short distance the deepest.

Inca ruins at Marpa, Cotahuasi Canyon
Marpa is the largest and most important of several archaeological sites found in the Cotahuasi Canyon, which used to be a major Inca route from Cusco to the Pacific coast. You can still use sections of this road and see many other ruins from the period.
