The Amazon basin is a world of superlatives. The entire river system carries around 20% of the world's running fresh water, and the volume discharged into the Atlanctic Ocean is around 12 times that of the Mississippi. The world's largest rainforest is also the richest natural environment on Earth, with more animal, bird, plant and insect species than anywhere else. Of the South American countries only Chile doesn't contain part of the Amazon basin.

High quality photographic prints with a wide choice of framing options, canvas wrap prints, greeting cards and other products are available. Please visit the Framed Prints page for more details. If you would like a print of any photograph that is not shown in the printing gallery please contact James Brunker at magicalandesphotos@yahoo.com A high resolution version of the desired image can easily be uploaded for you.

Hoatzins

Hoatzins

A pair of hoatzins (Opisthocomus hoazin) rest in a tree. The only species in its family, the hoatzin resembles the prehistoric archaeopteryx as much as any living species. It is the world's only totally herbivorous bird and has a stomach system resembling a cows and full of bacteria to break down the celulose in the leaves it eats. This extra weight makes it an extremely clumsy flier and means it gives off an unpleasant odour!
