PERU - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Few countries can boast such a rich archaeological heritage as Peru, where many civilizations dating back thousands of years have left their mark. Although the best known, the Incas are only the most recent; many impressive sites from their period can be visited in the Cusco region. Peru's northern coast has been described as the Egypt of South America and is one of richest archaeological regions on the planet.

Huaca Arco Iris

Detail of the elaborate adobe friezes in the small temple known as Huaca Arco Iris (or Temple of the Rainbows, due to the rainbow-like figures on the friezes) pertaining to the Chimu culture on the outskirts of Trujillo. It is also known as Huaca del Dragon (Temple of the Dragon) due to the strange animal figures.
