Peru's northern coastal region has been described as "the Egypt of South America" due to the large number of archaeological sites that are found here. Many civilisations flourished in this area, some dating back to many centuries / millenia BC. The region also has some fine beaches and one of Peru's most beautiful colonial architecture in Trujillo, capital of La Libertad department.

Huaca El Brujo
Part of a frieze showing naked prisoners being led into captivity after defeat in battle on a pyramid in Huaca El Brujo (Temple of the Wizard), to the north of Trujillo. The frieze belongs to the Mochica or Moche culture, the main power in the region from roughly the time of Christ to 700AD. The Huaca El Brujo site appears to have been an important ceremonial centre for many cultures for millenia before the Mochica. Recently the tomb of a tattooed lady of Moche nobility known as “La Señora de Cao” was discovered in the same pyramid. For more details please visit the National Geographic magazine website
