PERU - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Few countries can boast such a rich archaeological heritage as Peru, where many civilizations dating back thousands of years have left their mark. Although the best known, the Incas are only the most recent; many impressive sites from their period can be visited in the Cusco region. Peru's northern coast has been described as the Egypt of South America and is one of richest archaeological regions on the planet.

Huaca de la Luna

Detail of a frieze showing the main deity of the Mochica culture “Ai Apaec”, also known as “The Decapitator”, as he appears to have been honoured by rituals involving human sacrifice. Variations of this figure are the main theme of these spectacular friezes, discovered in an almost perfect state of preservation in the Huaca de la Luna (Temple of the Moon) pyramid close to Trujillo. Little was known of social structure of the Moche culture (apart from the obviously advanced nature of their society and their amazing skills as goldsmiths and potters) until the spectacular discoveries in the late 1980’s at Sipan, to the north of Trujillo. These included the untouched tomb of a Moche ruler known as the Lord of Sipan which was described as the Tutankhamun of the Americas. For more details please visit the website of Las Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (in English)
