Magical Andes Photography

PERU - MOUNTAINS

The Andes form a backbone down the centre of Peru, dividing the coastal desert from the Amazon basin. The Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash in the north of the country near Huaraz form the highest tropical mountain range in the world; while the world famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu offers views of the Cordilleras Vilcabamba and Vilcanota. Totally different but equally spectacular are the giant volcanoes that rise above the high altitude desert around Arequipa and the Colca Canyon in the south of the country.

Mt. Veronica

Mt. Veronica, at 5680m / 18,635ft, is the highest peak in the Cordillera Urubamba range close to Cusco. Its Quechua name, Wakay Willca, means “Sacred Tears”. Although not the highest range in Peru it still offers impressive scenery and many traditional Quechua speaking villages. This view was taken from the Chinchero plateau on the other side of the Urubamba River, heavily farmed and offering a wonderful array of patchwork quilt fields whose colours vary with the seasons.
