The midwinter solstice (June 21st) is one of the most important dates for the indigenous people of the Andes. It also marks the New Year in the Aymara calendar (June 21st 2006 was the start of their year 5514) and is celebrated in highland villages and at ceremonial sites throughout Bolivia. Here musicians celebrate after the sunrise rituals at La Cumbre, the high point of the road from La Paz across the Cordillera Real to the lowlands. In the background is Mt. Huayna Potosí (6088m / 19,975ft).
