Magical Andes Photography

ANDEAN PEOPLE & FESTIVALS

The people of the Andes are as diverse and colourful as the landscapes around them. Many trace their roots back centuries to before the Spanish conquest of the Incas in 1532 and still cling to their native languages and traditional way of life. A mixture of these indigenous traditions and the Spanish imposed Catholic religion also makes for many spectacular and varied festivals!

Panpipe musician

The panpipes are probably the best known of traditional Andean musical instruments. Most commonly made of bamboo (though other materials are also used) they come in a huge variety of sizes and tones. The brightly coloured and intricately woven poncho of this Quechua man shows he comes from the Charazini area, in the remote Cordillera Apolobamba region of north western Bolivia along the Peruvian border.
