Magical Andes Photography

ANDEAN PEOPLE & FESTIVALS

The people of the Andes are as diverse and colourful as the landscapes around them. Many trace their roots back centuries to before the Spanish conquest of the Incas in 1532 and still cling to their native languages and traditional way of life. A mixture of these indigenous traditions and the Spanish imposed Catholic religion also makes for many spectacular and varied festivals!

Morenada dancers

The Morenada is another of the best known dances in Bolivia, and had its origins among the African slave communities brought to South America by the Spanish. It has since evolved into huge spectacles and is the most popular dance at the Gran Poder festival, which takes place in La Paz normally on the first weekend of June.
