CUSCO & SACRED VALLEY

Peru is synonymous with the Incas, without doubt the best known of the empires that existed in South America. They have left an impressive legacy of archaeological sites in Cusco and the nearby Sacred Valley; an area noted as much for its beauty as its ruins.

Cusco

Cusco (Peru) was once the capital of the Inca empire and the focus of Spanish attempts to subjugate the Incas when they arrived in the city in 1533; there were several battles until the Inca rebellion was finally put down with the execution of Tupac Amaru in 1572. Much of the city centre is built over the Inca original; the current main square or Plaza de Armas sits over the original and much larger Inca square known as Huacaypata. Where once it was surrounded by Inca palaces it is now dominated by two fine colonial churches: the Cathedral (L) and Compaņia de Jesus (R).
