San Lorenzo church in Potosi (Bolivia) is famous for its incredibly ornate mestizo-Baroque façade, a masterpiece mixing Catholic traditions and indigenous symbology. It is one of many fine churches in Potosi and a reminder of when it was the largest and richest city in the Americas, rivalling the major cities in Europe. The source of this wealth was the huge silver deposits in Cerro Rico (“Rich Mountain”) which overlooks the city; this mountain for a century provided over half the silver shipped out of the Americas by the Spanish.
