ARCHITECTURE

The conquest of South America by the Spanish led to the founding of new towns and cities throughout the continent, all with their own distinctive style and architecture. The continent is particularly rich in churches as the Spanish sought to impose the catholic religion on the indigenous people.

Cusco

Cusco (Peru) was once the capital of the Inca empire and the focus of Spanish attempts to subjugate the Incas when they arrived in the city in 1533; there were several battles until the Inca rebellion was finally put down with the execution of Tupac Amaru in 1572. Much of the city centre is built over the Inca original; the current main square of Plaza de Armas sits over the original and much larger Inca square known as Huacaypata. It is particularly beautiful at night. The Compañia de Jesus church has an ornate façade and was built over the site of the palace of the Inca Huayna Capac (known as Amarucancha: Palace of the Serpents) in the late 17th century.
