Coricancha / Sun Temple

Much of the Cusco's city centre is built over the Inca original. This is perhaps best seen here where the Santo Domingo church and monastery has been built over the Inca foundations of the Coricancha or Sun Temple, once the most important temple in the Inca empire. The Inca stonework has remained unmoved despite many earthquakes; the colonial church has been rebuilt several times however, the last after a major earthquake in 1950.
