Sucre was the first capital of Bolivia when it became a nation in 1825 and is still considered the official capital as the Supreme Court sits here, although the political capital has long moved to La Paz. It has had many name changes since it was founded as La Plata in 1538; one of its unofficial names is “The White City” as most buildings in the centre (a UNESCO Heritage Site) are painted white. The impressive 17th century metropolitan cathedral is a fine example.
