Potosi

Potosi (Bolivia) is the highest city of its size in the world (over 4000m / 13,000ft) and in its heyday in the 16th/17th centuries the largest and richest city in the Americas, rivalling the major cities in Europe. The source of this wealth were the huge silver deposits in Cerro Rico (“Rich Mountain”) which overlooks the city; this mountain for a century provided over half the silver shipped out of the Americas by the Spanish. As the reserves became exhausted and other more accessible silver deposits were discovered (notably in Mexico) Potosi’s fortunes collapsed as quickly as they had grown.
