Probably South America's best known capital city, Buenos Aires has an atmosphere and style that is unique. It grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fuelled by huge numbers of immigrants from Europe (mainly Spain and Italy) and money from meat, leather and wool industries among others (between the World Wars Argentina was one of the world's richest countries). Spending on remodelling the city in this period was enormous, not for nothing it is sometimes called "The Paris of South America" due to its European style architecture.

Street lamps, La Boca
La Boca is Buenos Aires' most distinctive and colourful district and was originally settled by French and Italian immigrants. As well as being famous for its brightly painted houses it is also famous for its fanatical support for the local football team, Boca Juniors (where Diego Maradona began his career).
