ARCHITECTURE

Arequipa

The cloisters of the Compañia de Jesus church in Arequipa, southern Peru, are one of the best examples of the city’s distinctive architecture and stone carving. Most of the original city was built using a white volcanic stone called sillar used nowhere else in Peru, and buildings are very solidly constructed and rarely more than one storey high (churches are an exception to this) to resist the frequent earthquakes in the region.
