Magical Andes Photography

MT. ACONCAGUA REGION

Aconcagua (6962m / 22,840ft) is the highest peak in the Andes (in fact the highest in the Americas or anywhere in the world outside the Himalayas) and is found in central Argentina near Mendoza. A mecca for mountaineering as a result, the area contains spectacular mountain scenery, not only around Aconcagua itself but throughout the whole central Andean Cordillera. Notable regions include the Calingasta Valley in neighbouring San Juan province and the great rock canyon of Talampaya National Park in La Rioja province.

Plaza de Mulas Base Camp

Bt far the most popular approach to the summit of Aconcagua is the northern route - Plaza de Mulas is the first base camp along this route. The sheer rocky west face of Aconcagua is in the background: the route heads up over the ridge just out of the left hand side of the image before approaching the summit from the back (seen from this direction).
