Aconcagua (6962m / 22,840ft) is the highest peak in the Andes (in fact the highest in the Americas or anywhere in the world outside the Himalayas) and is found in central Argentina near Mendoza. A mecca for mountaineering as a result, the area contains spectacular mountain scenery, not only around Aconcagua itself but throughout the whole central Andean Cordillera. Notable regions include the Calingasta Valley in neighbouring San Juan province and the great rock canyon of Talampaya National Park in La Rioja province.

Mt Aconcagua south face
The impressive south face of Aconcagua, offering some of the most challenging routes available to the summit for mountaineers. To compensate the approach route via the Lower Horcones valley to base camp at Plaza Francia is the shortest and also easily accessible to trekkers (3 days round trip)!
