Aconcagua (6962m / 22,840ft) is the highest peak in the Andes (in fact the highest in the Americas or anywhere in the world outside the Himalayas) and is found in central Argentina near Mendoza. A mecca for mountaineering as a result, the area contains spectacular mountain scenery, not only around Aconcagua itself but throughout the whole central Andean Cordillera. Notable regions include the Calingasta Valley in neighbouring San Juan province and the great rock canyon of Talampaya National Park in La Rioja province.

Mt Aconcagua at sunset
Sunset turns the almost sheer rocky west face of Aconcagua golden as it looms over the base camp at Plaza de Mulas.
