Aconcagua (6962m / 22,840ft) is the highest peak in the Andes (in fact the highest in the Americas or anywhere in the world outside the Himalayas) and is found in central Argentina near Mendoza. A mecca for mountaineering as a result, the area contains spectacular mountain scenery, not only around Aconcagua itself but throughout the whole central Andean Cordillera. Notable regions include the Calingasta Valley in neighbouring San Juan province and the great rock canyon of Talampaya National Park in La Rioja province.

Calingasta Valley
Typical scenery near Barreal in the beautiful Calingasta Valley, where the dry desert scenery of the pre Cordillera contrasts with fields in the well watered valley floor. Water comes from the glaciers of the Cordillera de la Ramada to the west, a little known range with several peaks over 6000m /20,000ft.
