Aconcagua (6962m / 22,840ft) is the highest peak in the Andes (in fact the highest in the Americas or anywhere in the world outside the Himalayas) and is found in central Argentina near Mendoza. A mecca for mountaineering as a result, the area contains spectacular mountain scenery, not only around Aconcagua itself but throughout the whole central Andean Cordillera. Notable regions include the Calingasta Valley in neighbouring San Juan province and the great rock canyon of Talampaya National Park in La Rioja province.

Ischigualasto Provincial Park
Ischigualasto means “lifeless land” in Quechua, an apt description. As well as unusual desert scenery the Park is famous worldwide amongst palaentologists for fossil discoveries. The oldest dinosaur fossils so far discovered have been found here, as well as several species not known from anywhere else. Located in San Juan province, the Park borders the Talampaya National Park.
