Giant quinoa plant monument just outside Salinas de Garci Mendoza, Oruro Department, Bolivia
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is the most important crop in south west Bolivia and often the only crop that can be grown in the dry soils. Salinas de Garci Mendoza is often called the Capital of Quinoa in Bolivia - the region is famous for its quinoa real / royal quinoa, said to be the best quinoa in the world. The sign on the left has details of funding by the Ministry of Rural Development / Ministerio de Desarollo Rural y Tierras for projects.
