Manuel Mariano Melgarejo was born in Tarata on 13 April 1820. He was the 18th President of Bolivia and in power from December 28 1864 to January 15 1871 (both takeovers were coups). He fled to exile in Lima, Peru where he was assassinated on November 23 1871. He is generally considered to have been one of Bolivia's worst presidents.
