The distinctive flat topped Mt Mururata (5868m / 19,260ft) lies in the southern part of the Cordillera Real to the north of Mt Illimani and can be seen from the higher parts of La Paz and El Alto. According to legends it once one a higher mountain than Illimani; during a battle between the peaks Illimani decapitated Mururata and the head flew across the altiplano to become the Sajama volcano.
