Few cities in the world enjoy as spectacular a setting as La Paz, set in a canyon in the altiplano (which was carved by the River Choqueyapu and its tributaries) with superb views to the nearby Cordillera Real mountain range. Views of the city are dominated by Mt Illimani, at 6439m / 21,125ft Bolivia’s second highest mountain and the city's guardian and symbol. The city centre is at an altitude of around 3650 m / 11,975ft but due to its rugged topography there is around 1000m / 3,280ft height difference between the highest and lowest parts of the city! This gallery contains images of general views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
