Monument to indigenous leader Túpac Katari in main square and colonial church, Ayo Ayo, La Paz Department, Bolivia
Túpac Katari (born Julián Apasa Nina in approx 1750 in Ayo Ayo) was an Aymara leader who led indigenous rebellions against the Spanish. With an army of around 40,000 he laid siege to La Paz for 184 days in 1781 (approx 20,000 died before the siege was broken). A second siege later the same year was unsuccessful. Túpac Katari was captured by the Spanish and executed on November 15th, 1781.
