Uyuni is a small town in south west Bolivia that was founded in 1890 as a railway centre - it was an important junction where the lines from the mine at Huanchaca to Antofagasta (on the Chilean coast) and La Paz to Villazon on the Argentine border crossed. Trains still run from Oruro via Uyuni to Villazon and also from Uyuni to Calama in Chile (mainly freight). Nowadays it is an important tourist centre for tours visiting the nearby Salar de Uyuni and the surrounding region.
This gallery contains images of Uyuni town, the nearby village of Colchani (through which most tourists pass to access the Salar de Uyuni) and other villages on the shore of the Salar (such as Tahua, Coquesa and Jirira on the northern shore at the base of the Tunupa volcano). Please see the Uyuni Train Cemetery gallery for images of its famous train cemetery, which is just outside the town.
