Monument to El Moto Méndez and main entrance of San Bernardo de Tarija cathedral, Tarija, Bolivia
Eustaquio "El Moto" Méndez Arenas was born in San Lorenzo near Tarija on 19th September 1785. He was a noted guerrilla leader and took part in many battles during the War of Independence. He was killed at the Battle of Santa Bárbara de Tarija in 1849 and as today a local hero in the Tarija region. He was given the "El Moto" name after he lost an arm in an accident.
