Carlos Palenque Avilés ("El Compadre") was a popular singer, musician, TV and radio presenter. He was a prominent figure in Bolivian media and founded the Televisión Popular Canal 4 channel. He moved into politics in the 1980s and died of a heart attack on 8th March 1997, the same year he was standing as a presidential candidate.
