Monument with a copy of the famous note written by miner José Ojeda at the entrance to the San José Mine, Region III, Chile
33 miners were trapped when a tunnel collapsed in the San José mine (which is near Copiapo) on 5 August 2010. The probe used by the rescue teams reached the gallery where the miners were trapped on 22nd August, 18 days after the tunnel collapse. The note, written by miner José Ojeda and attached to the probe, was the first contact the miners had with the rescue teams and outside world. They were finally rescued on 13th October 2010 after 70 days underground, the longest time anyone has survived being trapped underground.
