Cairn with 3 crosses in front of Santo Tomás church, Isluga village, Isluga National Park , Region I , Chile
Santo Tomás (St Thomas) church in Isluga village dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. The stepped cairn in front of the entrance is a form the the Chakana or Andean Cross, an ancient symbol used by the indigenous people of the Andes to represent their vision of the universe. Note the fruits / vegetables on the central cross, people in the Andes often make offerings to Pachamama / Mother Earth during the year. These are left from Carnival, which coincides with the harvest season so crop offerings giving thanks for the harvest are common.
