Former prison building in Pisagua , Region I , Chile
The public prison in Pisagua was built in 1910 and has been used as a concentration camp for political prisoners on several occasions. Captain Augusto Pinochet was the camp commander in 1948 when it housed Chilean Communists. Most notoriously it was a prison camp and torture centre in the years after Pinochet took power in the 1973 military coup. It was declared a National Monument in December 1990.
