Monument on site of Battle of Tarapacá , Region I , Chile
The Battle of Tarapacá was fought between Chilean and Peruvian land forces on 27 November 1879 during the War of the Pacific. The battle resulted in a victory for the Peruvian army but they were unable to maintain control of the Tarapacá province and retreated to Arica, leaving Tarapacá under Chilean control (the Chileans having already previously captured the important port of Iquique).
