Spiny Holdback tree (Caesalpinia spinosa, local name tara)
Native to Peru, where it is commonly known by its Quechua name tara. Its Spanish name is algarroba tanino. It is found in much of western South America and has been introduced to parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and California. It grows well in dryer climates from sea level up to 3000m, tolerates poor soils and is resistant to most pests and diseases. The seed pods are an important source of natural tannins which are often used in leather production, trees are often grown commercially for this purpose.
