The 3rd largest country in South America, Peru is one of the most diverse physically and undoubtably the richest historically. The Andes mountains divide (often abruptly) the Pacific coastal desert regions from the Amazon basin. The Andean regions contain the world's highest tropical mountain range (the Cordillera Blanca) and the Cotahuasi and Colca Canyons, the 2 deepest canyons in the world. The Inca city of Machu Picchu is one of the most famous sights of the continent, but Peru boasts a pre-Columbian history going back millenia and has a huge number of archaeological sites to prove it.
