Monument to uprising against Spanish colonial rule led by Túpac Amaru II in Plaza de Armas, Pampamarca, Canas Provice, Peru
Túpac Amaru II (he claimed to be a descendent of the last Inca Túpac Amaru) was born in Canas Province. He is famous for leading a large uprising (La Gran Rebelión de Túpac Amaru II) against the Spanish which started on 4 November 1780 and was ultimately unsucessful. It was the first major rebellion by indigenous people in Spanish colonies and inspired similar uprisings in the central Andes region.
