Ceramic bulls and Arma Christi / Arms of Christ cross with Andean condor and INRI abbreviation for protection on tiled roof of house, Pisac, Sacred Valley, Peru
Pairs of ceramic bulls (which are traditionally made in Pucará, Puno Region) and crosses are commonly placed on the roofs of buildings in the Cusco Region and elsewhere in Peru. They are believed to bring protection and good luck to the family, and show the influence of the Spanish / Catholic colonisation of the region. This cross is a version of the Arma Christi / Arms of Christ cross which includes instruments of the passion, such as the ladder, spear and sacred heart. Indigenous / Andean symbols are often present as well, such as the Andean condor (considered a deity by the indigenous people) in this image.
