Found in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, southern Brazil, Uruguay. Locally common in reed beds in fresh and broackish water in lowlands and along coasts, and also in altiplano regions of Peru and Bolivia. Only member of its genus. Local names: junquero, totorero, trabajador, bate-bico.
