Adult Peruvian pelicans ( Pelecanus thagus )
Common in the cold Humboldt Current region off Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile. Non breeding birds often wander north to Ecuador. This image shows both nonbreeding (2 birds on left) and breeding (white heads, in centre) birds. Formerly considered a subspecies of the (much smaller) brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). Local name: pelícano.
