These striking coloured or polychromatic chullpas are found in the River Lauca valley in the far west of Bolivia. They were built in the 16th century by the Carangas culture; the coloured patterns are thought to be influenced by those on Inca textiles and ceramics (the Incas had forged an alliance with the Carangas in this period). Older chullpas don't have the patterns but are plain adobe. Over 100 chullpas can be found in the area, some of them have been restored with assistance from the World Monuments Fund. Poquintica volcano (5,712m / 18,740ft) lies on the Chilean border.
