Esteban Mariano Arze (or Arce) Alba y Uriona was born in Tarata in 1765. He is best known for being one of the leaders of the Cochabamba Revolution in 1810 and defeating Spanish forces at the Battle of Aroma in the same year. After Spanish forces recaptured Cochabamba in 1812 he was tried in Buenos Aires and exiled to Bolivia's Beni Department, where he died on 24 February 1815.
