Túpac Katari (born Julián Apasa Nina in approx 1750) was an Aymara leader who led indigenous rebellions against the Spanish. With an army of around 40,000 he laid siege to La Paz for 184 days in 1781 (approx 20,000 died before the siege was broken). A second siege later the same year was unsuccessful. Túpac Katari was captured by the Spanish and executed by quartering in the plaza of Peñas village on November 15th, 1781.
