The Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Mt Carmel) is celebrated in many towns and villages in Latin America on July 16th. In La Paz the date coincides with the anniversary of the 1809 rebellion against the Spanish authorities (one of the first uprisings against Spanish rule in South America), led by Pedro Domingo Murillo. Both La Paz city and Department celebrate their anniversary festivities on this date. Other notable celebrations in Bolivia include those in El Alto's 16 de Julio district and Charazani.
