33 miners were trapped when a tunnel collapsed in the San José mine (which is near Copiapo) on 5 August 2010. The drill probe used by the rescue teams reached the gallery where the miners were trapped on 22nd August, 18 days after the tunnel collapse. This is the original note that was attached to the probe and the first contact the miners had with the rescue teams and outside world. It is now on display in the Atacama Regional Museum in Copiapo, the closest town to the mine. The miners were finally rescued on 13th October 2010 after 70 days underground, the longest time anyone has survived being trapped underground.
