The 33 miners were trapped underground when a tunnel collapsed in the San José mine on 5 August 2010. They were finally rescued on 13th October 2010 after 70 days underground, the longest time anyone has survived being trapped underground. Family members arrived at the mine entrance when news of the collapse emerged; as more people, rescue teams and media workers arrived the camp grew and was named Campamento Esperanza / Camp Hope. The relatives placed 33 flags (one for each miner) on the hillside above the camp with small shrines at the base of each one.
