Pairs of ceramic bulls (which are traditionally made in Pucará, Puno Region) and crosses are commonly placed on the roofs of buildings in the Cusco Region and elsewhere in Peru. They are believed to bring protection and good luck to the family, and show the influence of the Spanish / Catholic colonisation of the region. This cross is a version of the Arma Christi / Arms of Christ cross which includes instruments of the passion, such as the ladder and spear. Indigenous / Andean symbols are often present as well, such as the sun, moon, star and corn in this image.
