The historic centre of Lima is situated on the southern side of the Rimac River. As the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru it was the most important city in South America during the colonial period. Much of it has been rebuilt after it was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1746. The area contains many superb colonial buildings and churches, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
