The chacareros is a dance from the Puno region that is most commonly danced during February and March around Carnival. It is usually danced as part of rituals to give thanks to Pachamama (Mother Earth) for harvests (chacras is a common name for fields or agricultural terraces in Peru). The dance and accompanying music (played on curved flutes called lawa k’umu) was declared a Peruvian Cultural Heritage by the Culture Ministry in April 2016.
